Design Digest #03
2023 has been a crazy year so far. An ongoing war is ripping our society apart with inflation, rising interest rates, failure of banks, and layoffs left and right. On top of that, AI is starting to take over the world. And it’s doing so at a speed that no one expected.
It’s scary and exciting. AI will empower us in our jobs. We’ll be able to work more efficiently, be more creative, and everything will move just faster. Startups and big companies alike will all try to monetize on this new reality. But the change is going to be much bigger.
Digital interfaces are about to change forever, because the internet will never be the same again. ChatGPT plugins and integrations are the start of a future where we will not need to use a bunch of different products anymore. We’ll be interacting instead with super smart digital assistants that can help with anything we need. They’ll provide us with information, products, help us with tasks, and even give us content we’ll like.
Digital products, as we know them, will probably become just an augmentation of a smart assistant. The world has changed. And everyone will need to adapt. Including Designers.

Open AI branding
OpenAI is a research and deployment company with the mission of ensuring that Artificial Intelligence (AI) benefits all of humanity (let’s see). They have products such as DALL-E (text to image) and ChatGPT (text generator). The beautiful project from AREA 17 aimed to refresh its visual identity and website.

Poe (from Quora)
It’s hard to find tools that allow you to engage in a conversation with Large Language Models (LLM). Poe from the founder of Quora, makes it easy, offers a bunch of different bots (meaning you can have different conversations at the same time), and has a subscription plan in case you want to use Anthropic LLM (Claude+) or ChatGPT4. It is my most used tool when it comes to ChatGPT.

PromptBase Marketplace
PromptBase is a platform where prompts can be purchased for use in Text-to-Image models or Large Language Models, such as ChatGPT. For me this is a sign of people trying to make a quick buck from the trend before prompting becomes natural. Currently, using these AI tools still feels awkward and each tool has its own unique peculiarities. But eventual prompting will become second nature.

OpenAI (ChatGPT) plugins
The most transformative release from OpenAI. OpenAI plugins allow you to connect ChatGPT to third-party applications, augmenting ChatGPT’s capabilities. Imagine shopping directly from the ChatGPT interface. The possibilities are limitless, and this will transform the way we use the internet.

AI anime — Rock, Paper, Scissors
Corridor Digital, a production studio based in Los Angeles, used the Stable Diffusion text-to-image model to turn live-action footage into an anime short film. This is an amazing use of technology that leaves the impression that in the future, anyone with access to a video camera and a computer could create an anime.
